Comprehensive Guide to Module-by-Module AI Features and Roadmap
Evolution and Strategic Vision, 2025-2028
July 2026
Chapter 1 Overview of SAP Business AI
1-1 What Is SAP Business AI
SAP Business AI is the umbrella term for the enterprise AI solutions offered by SAP. Rather than being merely a generative AI tool, it is designed as an AI foundation deeply integrated with SAP’s ERP data, business processes, and organizational knowledge. As of 2025, more than 400 AI use cases were available, and at SAP Sapphire 2026, SAP unveiled its vision for the “Autonomous Enterprise.”
SAP Business AI is composed of three layers. The first layer is the “SAP Business AI Platform,” a foundation that integrates SAP BTP, SAP Business Data Cloud, and SAP Business AI. The second layer is the “SAP Autonomous Suite,” a business process automation suite that includes more than 50 Joule agents. The third layer is “Joule Work,” an intent-based user interface that offers a new way of working: conducting business through conversational interaction with AI across desktop, mobile, web, and voice.
1-2 What Is SAP Joule
Joule is the AI assistant and agent platform at the core of SAP Business AI. As of the end of 2025, it had been embedded in more than 35 SAP solutions, and by 2026 it had evolved into a fully agentic AI platform with more than 40 specialized agents and over 2,400 skills.
| Function Category | Description |
| AI Assistant | Joule Chat: Query and manipulate business data using natural language. For example, users can ask “Show me this month’s unpaid invoices.” |
| Joule Agents | AI agents that execute tasks autonomously, completing multi-step processes without human intervention. |
| Deep Research | Analyzes internal and external data across sources to generate strategic reports and insights (beta launched December 2025). |
| Role-Based Assistants | Entry points to Joule optimized for specific job functions, such as accounting, procurement, and production planning staff. |
| Joule Studio | A no-code tool for developing and deploying custom Joule agents and skills tailored to a company’s own needs (generally available since December 2025). |
| Agent-to-Agent | Joule agents collaborate with one another without human coordination, for example a finance agent calling on a logistics agent. |
1-3 SAP Joule Studio and the Agent Foundation
Joule Studio, which became generally available in December 2025, serves as a command center where companies can design, build, and deploy their own Joule agents and skills. By leveraging SAP Knowledge Graph (for deep business context), SAP Business Data Cloud (for data access spanning SAP and non-SAP systems), and SAP’s authentication and authorization services, organizations can build enterprise-grade custom agents.
|
◆ With Joule Studio 2.0 (scheduled for general availability in H2 2026), agent design-time access, the agent runtime environment, and inter-agent interoperability will be provided free of charge through the end of 2026. ◆ SAP LeanIX AI Agent Hub centrally manages the deployment status, impacted processes, and performance of all agents, enabling CIOs to manage agents as corporate assets. |

Chapter 4 Practical Considerations for Leveraging SAP Business AI
4-1 Which Companies and Which Modules Should Start First
The benefits of adopting SAP Business AI vary significantly depending on the edition and modules in use and the maturity of business processes. It is important to determine priorities based on the following perspectives.
| Perspective | Recommended Priority Area | Rationale |
| Areas with the fastest impact | FI: invoice matching, reconciliation, closing automation | Among the more than 400 AI scenarios, these are especially well-implemented with clear ROI |
| Priority areas for manufacturers | PP: Production Planning Agent / QM: Quality Detection AI | Autonomous release of production orders directly shortens the order-to-ship cycle |
| Procurement departments | MM / Ariba: Bid Analysis Agent | Eliminates manual bid comparison entirely, turning work that took weeks into minutes |
| HR departments | HCM: Expense Agent / HR Joule | Improves employee self-service and compliance response simultaneously |
| IT and development departments | BTP / ABAP AI: Joule for Developers | Reduces custom development effort while accelerating the use of standard AI functionality |
4-2 Requirements and Considerations for Using SAP Business AI
| Requirement/Consideration | Details |
| Cloud prerequisite | Most Joule agents assume SAP S/4HANA Cloud Public or Private Edition. They are often unavailable on ECC or legacy on-premise systems. |
| Licensing | Some Joule features require an SAP Business AI Premium Plus license (the licensing structure was reorganized in 2026). Joule Studio 2.0 is offered free of charge through the end of 2026. |
| Data quality | The accuracy of AI recommendations and automation depends on the quality of master and transactional data. Robust data governance is a prerequisite. |
| Governance | A structure for managing agent KPIs, scope of impact, and policies via SAP LeanIX AI Agent Hub is required. Because AI executes autonomously, designing approval workflows and roles is critical. |
| Customization | Joule Studio and SAP BTP allow standard agents to be extended and customized. However, expert knowledge is required to design a fit with a company’s own operations. |
4-3 The Relationship Between SAP’s 2027 Problem and AI Adoption
The end of SAP ECC maintenance in 2027 (the “2027 problem”) represents both the final deadline for companies to migrate to S/4HANA and the timing for their migration to SAP Business AI.
|
◆ Companies that remain on ECC or on-premise S/4HANA will see the “capability gap” with the autonomous AI suite widen rapidly between 2026 and 2027. ◆ Migrating to S/4HANA Cloud means immediate access to Joule agents, allowing companies to benefit from production planning, financial close, and procurement automation all at once. ◆ Companies considering migration urgently need to develop an integrated plan that synchronizes their AI adoption roadmap with their ERP roadmap. |
4-4 Physical AI: The Next Frontier
At SAP Connect 2025, SAP announced its “Physical AI” concept, which extends Joule agents beyond software into robotics and industrial systems. By combining physical AI tools, such as computer vision and collision detection, with Joule agents, robotic systems become capable of reasoning through complex goals and executing autonomously. For manufacturers, this vision represents “the next chapter of the Fourth Industrial Revolution”: the complete fusion of autonomous factories and digital twins with ERP and SCM.
Conclusion
Between 2024 and 2026, SAP Business AI underwent a qualitative shift from being a “supporting tool” to becoming an “autonomous business execution system.” Joule agents have begun taking on real business judgment and execution across every domain: financial closing, procurement, production planning, and human capital management.
Capitalizing on this evolution requires more than just understanding the technology, it demands a three-pronged effort encompassing business process redesign, strengthened data governance, and the establishment of governance structures for AI use. Addressing the 2027 problem and formulating AI strategy as a single, unified effort will be the key for companies, whether in manufacturing or services, to sustain their competitive advantage.
(This document is based on publicly available information as of July 2026. SAP’s roadmap is subject to change.)
